Tournament Highlights
* Live scoring implemented using Golf Gamebook for this year was a big hit as it not only simplified scoring calculations, but all teams were able to keep track of their place on the leaderboard during tournament play. |
  |
* In the inaugural event, Steve English managed to oversleep and no-show, causing a last-minute shuffling of teams. Following in the oversleeping tradition for this year was Derrick Miller, who eventually arrived at the turn to ride along for the remainder of the tournament. In honor (or disgrace) of this seemingly annual occurrence, a new tradition will be added to the Cuervo Classic going forward: presentation of "The Steve English Award of Excellence". This award will be presented to the person who provides the most disruption to the tournament in future years, and we're pleased to award that to Derrick Miller this year. Hopefully you can pass it on to someone else next year, Derrick! |
  |
* This year's tournament ended in dramatic fashion as the teams of Brad Bagby and Phil Oestmann (-2) tied Parker Hills and Doug Farchmin (-6) after a mid-round agreed upon 4-stroke handicap due to Hills and Farchmin partner absences. A sudden death, no handicap playoff ensued on the 18th hole, where both teams made par, just as they did as they played on to #1. Finally, on #2 - the third playoff hole - after an Oestmann drive and wedge to the green, Bagby sunk a 30 foot birdie putt to take home the cup in a true team effort! |
The Field
Registration for the 2nd annual Cuervo Classic is currently limited to graduating seniors from the Shawnee Mission East Class of 1999 and the brothers of a few select "Founding Cuervo Members".

Format: Two Man Scramble
We will be going with a more straight-forward format this year to quicken pace of play and give less frequent golfers a chance to hit out of the occasional fairway or putt for birdie. Here's how our two-man scramble will work: |
  |
   * Each member of the team will hit a tee shot (in any order). |
   * The team will decide which shot they would prefer to play and then go retrieve the other ball. |
   * Each member then plays a shot from the spot of the preferred ball. |
   * Continue this cycle until the ball is holed out. |
   * The maximum score on a given hole is triple bogey. |
   * Balls lost or hit out of bounds (white stakes) should be played like a lateral hazard: two club lengths from the spot the ball appeared to be lost, no closer to the hole and a 1 shot penalty. |

Tournament Beneficiary
The 2015 Cuervo Classic Tournament will benefit the Lee Ann Britain Infant Development Center through one of their current fundraising campaigns:
http://www.shawneemission.org/lee-ann-britain-infant-development-center
http://www.firstgiving.com/britainidc/2015-britain-idc-kids-campaign
Lee Ann Britain is the foremost autism therapy provider in Kansas City. Because demand for their program is so great - their waiting list goes out for years - they have also become a great resource for families with Autistic loved ones, helping to get children spots in other programs. The major issue in Autism right now is that the mandate for insurers to cover Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy and other forms of more traditional therapy (occupational therapy, speech therapy, etc.) for Autistic children does not go in to effect until 2016, and it is still unclear what is going to be covered once the mandate is in effect. Very few licensed ABA Therapists coupled with a huge (and growing) demand has resulted in outrageous costs to families that insurance will not cover, if parents can even find a spot for their child in a program. Money donated through this campaign will help ensure that financial support will always be available for children who need services offered at the Britain Center. Amy Milroy is the director of the Lee Ann Britain school and her husband went to Shawnee Mission East, which is a nice SME connection, and we could not be more pleased to help out with this cause.
