Tournament Summary

* The forecast all week showed a steady rain Saturday morning, calling into question some player availability, and leading us to wonder whether or not the tournament would be played at all. However, after raining all day Friday, the rain stopped overnight and other than some showers on a couple of holes on the back 9, we played through a nice, cool, overcast fall morning.

* Due to player availability fluctuation in the week leading up to play, the tournament committee decided to change the format of the event from a two-man scramble to a four-man scramble to help manage no-shows.

* Turns out, the change to a four-man scramble was a good move, because by the time of the shotgun start, some six players were missing, causing us to reshuffle the teams for the fourth time of the week.

* We ended up having 16 players, two foursomes, one threesome, and one fivesome due to the timing of when players arrived and which groups they found to pair up with.

* Team 4 of David Dwyer, Phil Oestmann, and Tanner Rapleye went out as a threesome with a mulligan and played great to reach -5, which tied Team 2 consisting of Stephen Marshall, Parker Hills, Wyatt Cobb, Erik Heintz, and Martin Altieri.

* In a sudden death playoff, each time made par on #18 before returning to #1. Team 4 just missed the green to the right of the long par 3 first while Team 2 was on the front edge facing a long putt. A great pitch left Team 4 with about 3 feet for par, and after Team 2 failed to get their lag putt close which led to a 3-putt bogey, Oestmann sealed the victory on his second attempt at the short putt.

* As a result of everyone’s generosity – and thanks in part to Vince Dean and Michael Fowler who were unable to play, but still made a contribution to charity – we raised $1000 for the SME Love Fund despite having the smallest field in tournament history this year.

* New players in the field this year included Chris Abrams, Bill Jones, and Matt McGee.

Steve English Award of

Steve English Award of "Excellence"

This award is bestowed upon the participant in the field that causes the most problems for the organizing committee each year, be it completely not showing up, oversleeping and missing the first tee time, or anything else that may be encountered in future years. Let's just say that it is NOT an honor to receive this award.

Brian Busby and Gary Lezak (questionable weather forecasts all week leading to several last-minute cancellations AND additions wreaking havoc on teams)

Format: Four Man Scramble

We switched to a four-man scramble format this year to more easily manage the teams due to lots of "maybe" replies due to the forecasted wet weather. Here's how our four-man scramble works:

   * Each member of the team will hit a tee shot (in any order).
   * The team will decide which shot they would prefer to play and then go retrieve the other ball.
   * Each member then plays a shot from the spot of the preferred ball.
   * Continue this cycle until the ball is holed out.
   * There are no gimmes - all putts must be holed out.
   * Lift, clean, and place or "preferred" lies are in effect: players may place ball within a club length of where balls rests.
   * The maximum score on a given hole is triple bogey.
   * Balls lost or hit out of bounds (white stakes) should be played like a lateral hazard: two club lengths from the spot the ball appeared to be lost, no closer to the hole and a 1 shot penalty.
   * If necessary, playoff will consist of sudden-death starting at hole #18 and proceeding until a winner is determined.

Tournament Beneficiary

The 2018 Cuervo Classic Tournament will again benefit the Shawnee Mission East High School "LoveFund". The LoveFund was started in honor of an SME graduate who passed away due to illness. The family asked family members and loved ones to donate to an SME fund that could help students cover costs of school related activities and help SME families. Funds are used for school fees, family expenses, class related trips and extracurricular school activities.
