Tournament Beneficiary
Long-time tournament attendee and friend, Derrick Miller, sadly lost his father, Dwight, earlier this year. Dwight was a great man and had a passion for coaching basketball and football. He coached (or coached against) many attendees of the tournament and to honor him this year, the 2019 Cuervo Classic Tournament will be contributing proceeds to the Kansas City Football and Cheerleading, formerly FCCJC, Scholarship Program in Dwight’s name. Additional donations are also welcome and may be mailed to 15030 W. 106th St, Lenexa, KS 66215.

Tournament Highlights
* Violent overnight thunderstorms made it appear that the tournament may actually not happen this year. But fortunately Hillcrest was able to accommodate a late start (due to cancellations from other players due to weather), and the lightning stopped around 7:30am allowing us to tee off and have great weather the rest of the day! |
* This was the first year that the tournament had officially adopted the 4 man scramble format and it was a big success with infrequent and less experienced players making big contributions to the low scores across the board. |
* This installment of the tournament included 31 players, smashing the previous Cuervo attendance record of 24. |
* We raised $1500 for the Kansas City Football and Cheerleading Scholarship Fund in honor of Dwight Miller, a record-breaking charitable donation as well. |
* With the Golf Gamebook scoring app (which has caused some issues in past years) completely not working on this day, we kept a "live" leaderboard over email, with groups sending updates after every couple of holes. We will adopt a new product for next year. |
* The winning team of David Dwyer, Phil Oestmann, Tanner Rapelye, and Derrick Miller for claimed the cup for a 2nd straight year with a final score of -9 after an anticlimactic “scorecard playoff” win over the team of JD Lebow, Ridge Harrison, Mike Kirby, and Parker Agee with a birdie on the #2 handicap, hole #5 (both teams made birdie on the #1 handicap 10th hole). |
* It was disappointing to have to settle things with a scorecard playoff, but unfortunately some members had to leave due to commitments right after the conclusion of 18 holes and the tournament committee found no other fair way to settle things after the idea of an arm wrestling match between JD and Oestmann was shot down due to JD “not being able to feel one side of his body” after a devastating back injury during the course of play. |
* And no disrespect to the other contest winners, but two particular shots earn shoutouts with congrats to Vince Dean Jr. for hitting a tee shot to about 20 feet for closest to the pin on the difficult #1 hole. And the drive that Danny Roberson hit on #10 was measured at 322 yards on a very wet course - it was quite impressive. |
* Another record was set with 11 new players in the field this year including: Johnny Pendleton, Taylor Cook, Robert Wells, Whitt Potts, Matt Miller, Mitchell Miller, JD Lebow, Mike Kirby, Parker Agee, Ridge Harrison, and Alex Schifman. |
* A big thanks to Nick Reddell for once again supplying commemorative t-shirts for the tournament. This year, the printers accidentally used the wrong Cuervo Classic logo - our special 5th anniversary one with a roman numeral "V" in the background. With some quick thinking, they were able to fix the shirt by adding a "I" to mark the 6th anniversary of the tournament! |
* The tournament had its first corporate sponsors this year with logos on the backs of the t-shirts. Hopefully the sale of sponsorships can be used in future years to offset some tournament costs and allow us to maximize the charitable donation. |
Steve English Award of 'Excellence'
This award is bestowed upon the participant in the field that causes the most problems for the organizing committee each year, be it completely not showing up, oversleeping and missing the first tee time, or anything else that may be encountered in future years. Let's just say that it is NOT an honor to receive this award.
Congratulations to Evan Close who, on his first Cuervo Classic invite, unresponsively overslept the tournament. Contributing factors may have included a concert the night before and the legendary overnight thunderstorms. But all 31 of the other guys made it, so... Fortunately, the rest of Evan's team showed up, and these are forgiveable offenses. We look forward to Evan waking up on time next year.

Format: Four Man Scramble
Here's how our four-man scramble works: |
* Each member of the team will hit a tee shot (in any order). |
* The team will decide which shot they would prefer to play and then go retrieve the other balls. |
* Each member then plays a shot from the spot of the preferred ball. |
* Continue this cycle until the ball is holed out. |
* THERE ARE NO GIMMES OR MULLIGANS - no do-overs, and all putts must be holed out. |
* Lift, clean, and place or "preferred" lies are in effect: players may place ball within a club length of where balls rests. |
* The maximum score on a given hole is double bogey. |
* Balls lost or hit out of bounds (white stakes) should be played like a lateral hazard: two club lengths from the spot the ball appeared to be lost, no closer to the hole and a 1 shot penalty. |
* If necessary, a sudden death playoff will ensue on Hole #1 or Hole #18 (depending on timing and availability) and proceed until a winner is determined. |
* If a sudden death playoff is not possible, a scorecard playoff will be implemented awarding the victory to the team with a lower score on the first hole working in order of hardest to easiest based on hole handicap. |
