Tournament Highlights

  • The 10th Annual Cuervo Classic was played on a beautiful afternoon at Sykes/Lady Overland Park Golf Course.
  • Due to abhorrent travel delays, Josh Kopmeyer was sadly a late scratch from the Team 4 after being stranded on the tarmac for over 6 hours in Austin, TX on Friday. We missed him but hope to have him back next year. As a result, Team 4 was afforded an extra shot by one of the other 3 players throughout the tournament.
  • Defending champs Jeremy Roberts, Steve Marshall, and Wyatt Cobb - who was only available for the front 9 due to KU football - combined with Martin Altieri and Brad Bagby - who was only available for the back 9 due to Lancer lacrosse - to assemble a 5-person juggernaut in Team 1 that was looking to repeat.
  • Team 1 rallied with birdies on the last 3 holes of regulation which landed them with a lead in the clubhouse at -9.
  • Team 4 comprised of Nate Solis, Derrick Miller, and David Dwyer opened with a blistering 28 on the front 9 and steady play to the finish saw them pull even with Team 1 at -9 after 18 holes.
  • With a packed O.P. course on a gorgeous fall weekend afternoon, quick thinking by the newly retained Chief Playoff Format Officer Parker Hills pitted the two tied teams against each other with approaches on #18 while Team 5 was finishing up.
  • On the last putt of the 1st playoff hole, Nate Solis drained a 25 footer to claim the cup! (Video credit to Parker Hills)
  • The group met up at some reserved tables at The Bullpen after the tournament to enjoy some food and beverages.
  • The 10th installment of the Cuervo Classic featured no first-time players, we hope to expand the field next year and get new additions.
  • Once again, Nick Reddell and Manick Prints came through with great-looking poly-blend t-shirts in a heather mint color, they turned out great.

Fun Stats

  • David Dwyer and Nate Solis won the inaugural Cuervo Cup in 2014 and repeated as a team in 2025 on the tournament's 10th anniversary.
  • Dwyer's 4th win (2014, 2018, 2019, 2025) ties him with Phil Oestmann (2015, 2018, 2019, 2023) for most all-time Cup wins at 4.
  • Derrick Miller's win places him 3rd all-time with 3 Cuervo wins (2017, 2019, 2025).

In Memoriam

We lost Steve English this past year. A 1999 SME grad, he overslept his scheduled tee time in 2014 but was a Cuervo participant in 2015. Due to his extra ZZZ's in 2014, the "Steve English Award of Excellence" was commissioned in his honor and is now retired in his honor as well. Steve was a friend to many members of the tournament and will be missed.

Format: Four Man Scramble

Here's how our four-man scramble works:

  • Each member of the team will hit a tee shot (in any order).
  • The team will decide which shot they would prefer to play and then go retrieve the other balls.
  • Each member then plays a shot from the spot of the preferred ball.
  • Continue this cycle until the ball is holed out.
  • THERE ARE NO MULLIGANS OR GIMMES - no do-overs, and all putts must be holed out.
  • Lift, clean, and place or "preferred" lies are in effect: players may place ball within a club length of where balls rests.
  • The maximum score on a given hole is double bogey.
  • Balls lost or hit out of bounds (white stakes) should be played like a lateral hazard: two club lengths from the spot the ball appeared to be lost, no closer to the hole and a 1 shot penalty.
  • If necessary, a sudden death playoff will ensue depending on timing and availability and proceed until a winner is determined.
  • If a sudden death playoff is not possible, a scorecard playoff will be implemented awarding the victory to the team with a lower score on the first hole working in order of hardest to easiest based on hole handicap.
